Oily skin is characterized by excess sebum production, leading to a shiny or greasy appearance, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and is prone to acne breakouts. It often has enlarged, visible pores and is more prone to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne due to clogged pores. Despite the oiliness, it may still experience dehydration, causing imbalances. Oily skin tends to be thicker and less prone to fine lines and wrinkles, but requires careful management to prevent breakouts while maintaining moisture.

A skincare routine for oily skin should focus on balancing oil production, controlling shine, and keeping pores clear without stripping the skin. Here’s an ideal routine:

1. Gentle Cleanser - Use a clay/charcoal, gel or foaming cleanser to remove excess oil and impurities. Look for ingredients like kaolin clay, witch hazel, Licorice root or tea tree oil to help keep pores clear and prevent breakouts.

2. Toner - Apply a toner with ingredients like witch hazel, rose hip, licorice root, and vitamin C to help tighten pores, reduce excess oil, and balance skin. Your toner should be hydrating and not an astringent or made with alcohol.

3. Lightweight Serum - Opt for a lightweight, oil-free serum with ingredients like rose hip oil, hyaluronic acid, ascorbic acid, glycerine and/or aloe to hydrate without clogging pores. Serums with Licorice root can also help combat breakouts.

4. Oil-Free Moisturizer - Even oily skin needs hydration. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturizer with ingredients like glycerin or aloe vera to maintain balance without adding extra shine.

5. Sunscreen - Finish with a mattifying, oil-free sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin from UV damage without causing more oiliness.

Nighttime Routine:  Use the same cleanser, toner, and serum, followed by a lightweight moisturizer. You can also add a treatment product with ingredients like retinol or benzoyl peroxide to target breakouts.

Weekly Treatments:  Exfoliate 1-2 times a week with a gentle exfoliator containing micro ingredients that aren’t too abrasive (NO sugar or salt scrubs on the face!) to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. Use a clay or charcoal mask once a week to absorb excess oil and deep-clean pores.
